About the Event
Join us in this unique opportunity to learn about the history of wampum, the endangered Munsee-Delaware language, and its connection to the land surrounding us. Our guest teacher is Kristin Jacobs, spirit name Loowanaxung, translating to North Wind. Kristin is Delaware wolf clan from Eelunaapéewi Lahkeewiit, ON, Canada. During a visit in the summer of 2023, Kristin led a workshop in which we began creating a wampum belt that reflects our stewardship to the land and the Hudson Valley, the original homeland of the Lunaapeewak. During this year's event, we will learn about the history and meaning of wampum and continue work on this wampum belt (and hopefully complete it!).
Kristin has been reclaiming and teaching her endangered Language: Munsee-Delaware for over 10 years, and during this workshop, she will teach participants to say a few words and talk about her journey learning and teaching the Munsee language. Kristin and her mother will also talk about life in their contemporary communities in Ontario and how their communtities ended up where they are today.
We will provide coffee and a Northeastern traditional tea during this event, and feel free to BYO snack/lunch to the workshop.
All proceeds from this event will go to Kristin to cover her time and travel expenses. Please RSVP in adnavce, as spaces are limited and we anticipate selling out. Admission for this event is included in an Eco Camp reservation! Book a weekend stay to take a deep dive into Lenape history: weekend Eco Camp events include our Friday Night Fire, this Saturday Wampum Workshop, and our Sunday morning Exploring the Lenape Landscape guided walk.
