About the Event
Join us for a unique natural history walk and harvest celebration! Local ethnoecologist Justin Wexler will guide us through the plantings and surrounding forests of Waawtäawtheyakwe, an indigenous plant-themed garden installation created by Hortulus Animae at The Petronio Residency Center. , is a unique garden installation created at in a 2022 collaboration between Wild Hudson Valley and with the help and approval of the language department and tribal council. Waawtäawtheyakwe features plants and growing methods that reflect traditional native culture and natural history in the Hudson Valley. Ethnoecologist Justin Wexler will describe traditional harvesting practices in the garden installation and the precontact Catskill Mountain landscape as we encounter native flora and fauna on a walk through the forest of the Doris Duke Preserve Round Top.Waawtäawtheyakwe: Those That Sustain UsThe Petronio Residency CenterHortulus Animae Stockbridge-Munsee Community’s
This event will take place in both the garden installation and in the woods, so be sure to wear comfortable footwear!
Advance registration for this event is required. Please do not attend if you are feeling ill or have been exposed to someone with COVID.
