About the Event

Join us for a unique natural history walk and harvest celebration! Local ethnoecologist Justin Wexler will guide us through the plantings and surrounding forests of Waawtäawtheyakwe, an indigenous plant-themed garden installation created by Hortulus Animae at The Petronio Residency Center. Waawtäawtheyakwe: Those That Sustain Us, is a unique garden installation created at The Petronio Residency Center in a 2022 collaboration between Wild Hudson Valley and Hortulus Animae with the help and approval of the Stockbridge-Munsee Community’s language department and tribal council. Waawtäawtheyakwe features plants and growing methods that reflect traditional native culture and natural history in the Hudson Valley. Ethnoecologist Justin Wexler will describe traditional harvesting practices in the garden installation and the precontact Catskill Mountain landscape as we encounter native flora and fauna on a walk through the forest of the Doris Duke Preserve Round Top.

This event will take place in both the garden installation and in the woods, so be sure to wear comfortable footwear!

Advance registration for this event is required. Please do not attend if you are feeling ill or have been exposed to someone with COVID.

Check-in by 1:30 PM at The Petronio Residency Center (278 Crows Nest Rd, Round Top, NY 12473).
